SQP-Equine

This qualification is designed for anyone working within a Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) registered premises, an Equine veterinary practice registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), or a retail pharmacy registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

This would suit a person working within an Equine veterinary practice, agricultural merchants, pet retail, online pharmacy or other equine-related business as it allows you to prescribe and supply certain veterinary medicines independently.

SQPs play a vital role in animal welfare by providing advice and ensuring the responsible supply of medicines.

What can an SQP do?

The Equine SQP qualification can open doors to a wide range of careers in the equine, animal health, veterinary medicines, feed, and retail sectors. Progression routes include Animal Medicines Advisor, Equine Technical Advisor, Nutrition Advisor, Store or Area Manager, Technical Sales Specialist, Compliance Manager, and Industry Trainer, with opportunities to further specialise through additional SQP categories, nutrition, veterinary nursing, or management qualifications.

What medicines are SQPs able to prescribe and supply? 

POM-VPS medicines are mainly authorised for administration to farm animals and horses, and are used to reduce or prevent effects of endemic disease in herds, flocks or individual animalsNFA-VPS medicines are only for use in non-food animals where they may be used routinely to prevent or limit the effects of endemic disease.

Legislation and Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) Status for the Supply of Veterinary Medicines

This theoretical unit enables the learner to develop the essential knowledge required to work as a Suitably Qualified Person (SQP), including the legal requirements for prescribing and supplying veterinary medicines.

Learners will explore the VMD SQP Code of Practice, understand the responsibilities and limitations of the SQP role, learn when referral to a veterinary surgeon is necessary, and gain an understanding of record keeping and adverse event reporting requirements

Equine Health for the Suitably Qualified Person (SQP)

This theoretical unit enables the learner to gain an understanding of equine anatomy and physiology through a systems-based approach, alongside key principles of nutrition, feeding, health, and disease prevention. Learners will explore common equine diseases and parasites, develop confidence in using anatomical and physiological terminology, and learn how to provide advice on nutrition, disease control programmes, and health plans to support equine health and welfare.

Prescribing and SUPPLYING VETERINARY Medicines

This practical unit enables to develop the practical skills needed to safely prescribe, supply and dispense veterinary medicines within the scope of the SQP role. Learners will gain experience in providing advice to equine owners, using the VMD Product Information Database, working within legislative requirements, and managing potential adverse medicine reactions.

*Candidates who have achieve C-SQP will only need to complete units AMAE02 and AMAE03.
*Equine RVN’s will only need to complete AMAE01 and AMAE03
*Equine RVNs with and C-SQP will only complete AMAE03

SQP Register

Once you have passed the qualification you will be entered onto Vetskill and VMD SQP register SQP – Register – Vet Skill Hub as a J-SQP. This registration must be renewed annually, and you must complete 5 hrs of CPD per year.

Once registered with VetSkill, you can access VetSkill’s SQP Hub. This contains VetSkill’s online SQP CPD recording system, allowing you to view, monitor and upload records and evidence of your completed CPD.
