Advanced Veterinary Nursing

This qualification is designed for Registered Veterinary Nurses(RVNs) wishing to advance their knowledge and skills in practice nursing to a mastery level beyond that of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Day One Skills and Competences.

It is intended to provide relevant practical skills and underpinning knowledge that is relevant to the role of a Registered Veterinary Nurse working within the practice and consulting room or district nurse environments, and will demonstrate mastery (possessing an outstanding skill or having expertise) of practice nursing skills.

Evidence-based nursing and research is expected throughout this qualification to explore best practice and critically compare current processes.

01.
Professional Practice and Legislation

On completion of this unit, the learner will be able to critically evaluate the RVN and SQP role in practice and district nursing roles in providing nursing clinics/consultations, including the relevant legislation, guidelines, and Codes of Conduct/Practice including medicines legislation and guidelines on responsible use of medicines.

Consulting Skills

On completion of this unit, the learner will be able to critically evaluate the fundamentals of communication and consulting, including analysing the principles of consultation preparation and models of consulting; and critically evaluate the principles of marketing and selling skills relating to RVN consultations, and principles of client compliance.

Also included is how consulting skills and preparation differ in the practice when compared with district nursing; the key principles.

Nutrition and Diet

On completion of this unit, the learner will be able to critically evaluate the nutritional assessment of veterinary patients, critically evaluate the development and implementation of nutritional plans, critically evaluate the principles of nutrition, the components of veterinary recommended diets, and the causes, risks, and management of obesity.

This includes key points of body condition scoring, and obtaining a detailed and accurate nutrition history the principles of calculating nutritional requirements and analysing diets.

Medical Clinics

On completion of this unit, the learner will be able to critically evaluate the principles of clinical examination, and recognising and maintaining companion animal health, critically evaluate diagnostic tests that may berequired for medical clinics, and how to obtain these.

Critically evaluate the principles of pain assessment and formulating and implementing analgesic plans for medical clinic cases; critically evaluate the key principles of life-stageand wellness clinics, and the specific requirements for medical nursing clinics; and critically analyse the principles of palliative care and owner support.

Providing the skills in regards to the principles and considerations for chronic pain cases, pain clinics, well pet clinics, vaccination clinics, paediatric clinics, senior healthcare clinics, arthritis clinics, dentistry clinics, cardiac clinics, renal clinics, feline urinary clinics, post-surgical clinics, and other disease management clinics; and how nursing clinics and consultations can aid owners with palliative care for companion animals.

05.
Prescribing and Dispensing for the Practice Nurse

On completion of this unit, the learner will be able to: explain and evaluate the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs prescribed fora range of medical disorders; critically evaluate the principles of preventative health programmes; and critically evaluate the requirements for safe and effective supply of veterinary medicinal products. This unit is designed to provide learners with a grounding in prescribing and dispensing for the Practice and/or District Nurse.

coaching, mentoring & support

This unit is designed to provide learners with a grounding in leadership, coaching, mentoring, and support in the veterinary practice.

On completion of this unit, the learner will be able to critically evaluate the principles of conflict management within the veterinary practice environment.

Critically evaluate the key principles of leadership and management in veterinary nursing; and critically evaluate the importance of communication and teamwork in veterinary practice.

Understand the requirements of clinical supervision for Student Veterinary Nurses, Student Veterinary Surgeons, newly qualified employees, and auxiliary staff, and the importance of managing stress and physical and mental wellbeing in veterinary practice.

07.
practical practice nurse skills

This unit is intended to develop mastery of practice nursing skills beyond that required of the RCVS Day One Competences, and to demonstrate advanced practitioner status in these skills.

This unit is the practical element of the course and will be largely completed within the veterinary practice in which the learner works, with a number of guided learning hours being directed towards the OSCE practical summative assessment.

08.
Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) qualification

Embedded within this qualification is the content required to become a Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) for Companion Animals. A Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) is a legal category of professionally qualified persons who, under the Veterinary Medicines Regulations, are entitled to prescribe and/or supply certain veterinary medicines.

These medicines are categorised as prescription-only medicines prescribed by a veterinary surgeon, pharmacist or suitably qualified person(POM-VPS), and non-food animal non-prescription medicines supplied by aveterinary surgeon, pharmacist or suitably qualified person (NFA-VPS). The veterinary medicinal products an SQP is entitled to prescribe and/or supply depends on the scope of the registration they hold.

Entry requirements

What do you need?

The learner must be a Registered Veterinary Nurse with 6 months post qualification experience.

You will also require a Mentor in practice who is an RVN or MRCVS with an appropriate level 5 qualification.

Skills Portfolio
You will compile a skills portfolio to demonstrate your mastery of practical skills. Each of the skills listed must be signed off to mastery level by an MRCVS or RVN who holds an appropriate level 5 qualification

Assignments
You will complete one assignment of 2000 words covering three unit areas.

Practical Case Reports
You will complete three practical case reports to be included in the evidence requirements in the portfolio.

Written Examination
You will complete one written examination assessing the six unit’s areas on completion of the units.

Practical Examination
You will complete one long case scenario and professional discussion. The course is a regulated level 5 qualification and also embeds the Vetskill SQP Certificate of Registration Leaners will cover a range of units within the course, which focus on the practice, consulting and district nursing role.

How is this course delivered?

The course isdelivered online via a virtual platform. There will be a live classroom session online with a tutor every 5 weeks.

Yes, this will be confirmed on completion of your qualification and you will be entered onto an AVN register.
