Advanced Veterinary Nursing

This qualification is designed for Registered Veterinary Nurses(RVNs) wishing to advance their knowledge and skills in ECC to a mastery level beyond that of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Day One Skills and Competences.

It is intended to provide relevant practical skills and underpinning knowledge that is relevant to the role of a Registered Veterinary Nurse working within and ECC environment, and will demonstrate mastery (possessing an outstanding skill or having expertise) of ECC nursing skills.

Evidence-based nursing and research is expected throughout this qualification to explore best practice and critically compare current processes.

01.
FUNDAMENTALSOF EMERGENCY AND CRITICAL CARE

On completion of this unit the learner will have an in-depth knowledge and understanding required to meet the legal restrictions and professional obligations when working within veterinary emergency care environment. Including the process of patient triage, knowledge surrounding the current guidelines for CPRC and an understanding of methods for effective communication when conversing with clients and as part of an emergency.

02.
PRIMARY MANAGEMENT OF THE EMERGENCY AND CRITICAL PATIENT

This unit covers all aspects associated with the immediate veterinary nursing treatment of the ECC patient. Including aetiology and pathophysiology associated shock, and critically review interventions. Expanding learners ability to evaluate normal and abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) traces, enhancing knowledge and understanding of intravenous fluid therapy and diagnostic procedures, appraising their importance in the stabilisation of the emergency and critical patient.

03.
ADVANCED VETERINARY NURSING INTERVENTIONS

This unit will facilitate learners to gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the nursing interventions that are applied when caring for the ECC patient. Critically analyse the provision of anaesthesia and the role of the RVN in mitigating riskfactors. Including the aetiology and pathophysiology of pain and the provision of analgesia. Learners will analyse the nutritional requirements of the critical patient including assisted feeding and nutritional support. Comprehensively evaluate the management of the recumbent patient.

04.
ADVANCED VETERINARY NURSING MANAGEMENT OF ECCPRESENTATIONS

This unit will provide learners with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiology for a range of ECC patient conditions. Learners will review the current scientific evidence base for the aetiology of emergency conditions, predisposing factors and presenting clinical signs. Whilst considering the AVN management of a range of critical and emergency patients and demonstrate reflective practice.

05.
TRANSFUSION MEDICINE

This unit covers all aspects associated with the transfusion of blood products for the ECC patient within veterinary practice. Learners will gain an advanced knowledge and understanding of the principles that determine the selection of blood products and the indications for their use. Whilst reviewing the blood products available within the UK veterinary industry and consider the ethical arguments surrounding their use. Covering details of the process of blood collection, administration of transfusions and an intricate knowledge and understanding of transfusion reactions.

06.
COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE AND WELLBEING WITHIN THEEMERGENCY AND CRITICAL CARE SETTING

The unit enables learners to develop an advanced knowledge and understanding of collaborative practice within veterinary emergency and critical care. Critically appraising quality improvement strategies for personnel working within the ECC team and identifying the roles of individual team members. Principles of grief and loss will be ascertained, with a review on support available. Reflecting on the concept of resilience consider wellbeing for individuals working as part of ECC team.

Entry requirements

What do you need?

The learner must be a Registered Veterinary Nurse with 6 months post qualification experience working in or has access to an ECC environment.

You will also require a Mentor in practice who is an RVN or MRCVS with an appropriate level 5 qualification.

What can an AVN ECC
Nurse do?

On completion of the qualification, learners will be able to work to a 'mastery' level and provide gold standards emergency care in all aspects of the ECC environment. Whilst understanding the boundaries of an RVN whilst supporting other team members.

How is the qualification assessed?

Skills Portfolio
You will compile a skills portfolio to demonstrate your mastery of practical skills. Each of the skills listed must be signed off to mastery level by an MRCVS or RVN who holds an appropriate level 5 qualification

Assignments
You will complete one assignment of 2000 words each covering a unit areas.

Practical Case Reports
You will complete three practical case reports of 2000 words each covering four unit areas.

Written Examination
You will complete one written examination assessing four unit areas on completion of the units.

Practical Examination
You will complete one long case scenario and professional discussion of 45 minutes, followed by a 15 minute discussion. The course is a regulated level 5 qualification, learners will cover a range of units within the course, which focus on emergency and critical care nursing skills.

How is this course delivered?

The course is delivered online via a virtual platform. There will be a live classroom session online with a tutor every 5 weeks.

Yes, this will be confirmed on completion of your qualification and you will be entered onto an AVN register.
